Here's a reminder that special protection against too much sun may be required by many children. A good old fashioned sunburn can cause high fevers, upset stomachs, rashes and painful blistering.

And it can certainly ruin a family outing or vacation. Be especially careful with babies. Limit exposure to direct sunlight to five minutes for children less than one year old. And don't forget that burns can come from reflected rays while your child is in the shade. Reflection off the water is especially strong.

A good time for a sunburn is the first day in shorts or swimsuits. Remind your youngsters of this and encourage limited exposure the first few times. The "perfect tan" is very important to many teenagers. Again, a few words of caution might be helpful. Suggest starting with 15-20 minutes in the direct sunlight and increasing the time gradually.

There is nothing attractive about peeling skin resulting from a sunburn. If sunburns do occur, treatment varies with the degree gf the burn. A first degree burn where the skin turns white when it is touched can usually be treated with cool cloths or lotions. Second degree burns with blistering and severe pain deserve attention from your doctor.
